Viral/Host Genetics Program
Overview
This program supports basic and clinical research to determine the viral and host genetic factors regulating the development of neurologic and neuropsychiatric complications caused by HIV in the developed and developing world.
Areas of Emphasis
- Characterize the viral evolution and replication in the CNS compartment.
- Study HIV-1 molecular diversity and resulting functional consequences.
- Determine the cellular and viral factors that maintain viral latency or promote viral activation and recrudescence in the brain.
- Identify host genetic factors and markers linked with susceptibility and progression of HIV-associated nervous system disease.
- Conduct genetic studies of distinct HIV clades in resource poor settings and relationship to mechanisms of HIV neuropathogenesis.
