Director’s Update: Thomas Insel Named Acting Director for New Translational Science Center at NIH
On December 23, 2011, NIMH Director Thomas R. Insel, M.D., was formally designated acting director of the newly established National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at NIH. NIH Deputy Director for Science, Outreach, and Policy Kathy L. Hudson, Ph.D., was named as acting deputy director of NCATS. Both will also continue in their current positions until permanent leaders for the new Center have been selected.
NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., stated in a recent post on the NIH Feedback blog, “The goal of NCATS will be to develop new ways of doing translational research that the public and private research and development communities can adopt.”
By identifying bottlenecks and other opportunities for streamlining the diagnostic and treatment development processes, which currently average around 10-15 years 1, NCATS aims shorten the time for research-based interventions to be implemented in patient care.
For further details about the NCATS budget and program areas, see the NIH press release.
