On September 10-11, 2012, the NIMH Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health (ORDGMH) and Division of Services and Intervention Research (DSIR) convened the meeting, “Research to Improve Health and Longevity of People with Severe Mental Illness.” The purpose of the meeting was to assess the state of the science in preventing and treating medical comorbidities in people with severe mental illness (SMI) and identify the most critically needed research to reduce premature mortality in this vulnerable group.

On May 14-15, 2012, NIMH, NICHD, and NINDS convened a meeting of brain banking experts from across the United States and with experts from the European Union’s Brain Banking network, BrainNet Europe. The goal of the meeting was to discuss issues related to the efforts by the three Institutes to take a more integrated and coordinated approach to brain banking in the U.S.
- Using Stem Cells for Biological and Therapeutics Discovery in Mental Illness

On April 24-25, 2012, scientists from academia, government and the private sector met to discuss advances and challenges in using patient-derived reprogrammed cells, such as induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) and induced neuronal cells (iNCs), to identify molecular, cellular, and developmental alterations relevant to mental illnesses and possible utility in diagnostics and drug development.

On April 9-10, 2012, NIMH convened a group of experts in cognitive training (CT) (also often referred to as cognitive remediation, CR), to review the current state of evidence for efficacy of CT approaches, discuss interventions currently in development, identify challenges to this line of research and research gaps, and learn of efforts to adopt CT interventions in clinical practice.

In March 2012, nearly 90 researchers, national partner organizations, and Outreach Partners from every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico met in Denver, Colorado for the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Outreach Partnership Program Annual Meeting. The Outreach Partnership Program is a nationwide initiative of NIMH’s Office of Constituency Relations and Public Liaison, and is designed to increase the public’s access to science-based mental health information through partnerships with national and state nonprofit mental health organizations.
