Strategic Objective 1
Promote Discovery in the Brain and Behavioral Sciences to Fuel Research on the Causes of Mental Disorders
NIMH invites grant applications from institutions and organizations that propose research to fulfill Objective 1 of the NIMH Strategic Plan: Promote Discovery in the Brain and Behavioral Sciences to Fuel Research on the Causes of Mental Disorders.
The Institute encourages applications that propose basic or translational research to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery through novel approaches, broader scientific participation, or greater integration of high-value datasets to discover the complex neurobiological architecture of the processes underlying mental illness. Because it is often difficult to forecast where great advances are likely to emerge, NIMH will continue to support a wide range of basic neuroscience studies, including discovery-based and hypothesis-driven proposals.
Research priority areas are identified within each of the following four strategies:
1.1: Develop an integrative understanding of basic brain-behavior processes that provide the foundation for understanding mental disorders.
1.3: Identify and integrate biological markers (biomarkers) and behavioral indicators associated with mental disorders.
These research topics are not intended to be exhaustive. Prior to submitting an application, investigators are encouraged to contact NIMH program staff to discuss proposed aims and relevance to these objectives. Please reference the relevant strategic objective and research priority in the project summary section of your application. Investigators are also encouraged to take advantage of existing NIMH and NIH resources where appropriate.
