Distribution of Mental Health Expenditures by Setting and Product (2003)
Mental health care payments go to many different service settings and products. The chart below is based on data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and shows the services that receive the largest proportions of mental health expenditures. The largest proportion of mental health care expenditures (31%) went to pay for outpatient care broadly, followed by inpatient care (24%) and retail prescription medications (23%).
