Distribution of Mental Health Expenditures by Service (2003)
Mental health care payments go to many different types of services and providers. The chart below is based on data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) and shows the services that receive the largest proportions of mental health expenditures. The largest proportion of mental health care expenditures (23%) went to pay for retail prescription medications. This was followed closely by payments to physicians and other mental health professionals, which represented 22% of all mental health care expenditures.
