The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research agency in the world. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Position Overview
The National Institute of Mental Health, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director for the Office of Disparities Research and Workforce Diversity (ODWD), Office of the Director (OD). The incumbent also serves as the Director’s principal staff advisor on issues of preparing a diverse scientific workforce and research relating to mental health disparities. He/She will provide effective leadership in the implementation of management policies and will be responsible for a complex and diverse set of programs to reduce mental health disparities and increase attention to health disparities and women’s mental health. He/She should be capable of managing interdisciplinary staff with a variety of backgrounds and interests to generate a work environment which is cooperative and productive.

Qualifications
Applicants must have an M.D. or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline, and be a recognized leader in the field of disparities research. As a scientific leader, the Director must recognize the best opportunities for co-funding projects initiated in other Institutes or other agencies. The incumbent must be able to manage federal budget and identify scientific priorities given modest budget allocations. This requires that program priorities must be evaluated frequently and shifted in ways to maximize funding, especially when outside resources are available for co-funding or cost-sharing. The incumbent is required to have extensive experience in Federal research grants administration, budget, women and rural disparities. Knowledge of NIH administrative policies, procedures, and operations are preferable but not essential.
