The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research agency in the world. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Position Overview

The NIMH is seeking superior candidates for Deputy Director of the Division of Translational Research (DTR). DTR directs, plans, and supports extramural portfolios of research that translate knowledge from basic science to discover the etiology, pathophysiology, and trajectory of mental disorders. and develop effective interventions. DTR stimulates and promotes integrative, multidisciplinary research in the following areas: phenotypic characterization and risk factors for psychiatric disorders; neurobehavioral mechanisms of psychopathology; trajectories of risk and resilience based on the interactive influences of genetics, brain development, environment, and experience; and design and testing of innovative neuromodulatory, psychosocial, and pharmacological interventions. The Deputy, along with the Division Director, serves as a principal advisor to the Institute Director. The Deputy shares fully in the responsibility for the development, direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Division’s programs and activities. With the DTR Director, they stimulate, support, and coordinate research and developmental and evaluative programs, and work to expand the resources of mental health research both nationally and internationally.

Qualifications

Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen with an M.D. or Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university in a mental health relevant discipline. The incumbent should have a strong background in translational neuroscience and/or translational clinical science to contribute most effectively to the mission of DTR. They should have demonstrated leadership ability and organizational skills, and the ability to collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders in the mental health community. They should have experience in federal research grants administration, developing and setting strategic priorities, communicating and promoting scientific policies, managing human and financial resources, and budgetary planning.
