The Division of Services and Intervention Research (DSIR) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) plans, directs, and supports programs of research that optimize the effectiveness and value of mental health interventions, improve the delivery and quality of evidence-based services, accelerate implementation and continuous improvement of new clinical practices across diverse treatment settings, and inform practice guidelines for mental health service providers. The Division seeks a motivated individual to serve as a Health Scientist Administrator/Program Officer to guide research training programs in the Office of Research Training and Career Development (ORTCD). The Office supports research education and training at the predoctoral, postdoctoral, and early-stage investigator levels and promotes career development activities in clinical trials (including preventive, treatment, and services research), clinical decision making (including technology-assisted and decision science approaches), implementation science, and mental health policy research.

DSIR offers a stimulating and collegial work environment with opportunities to impact mental health research priorities and contribute to the advancement of a national program of T2/T3 translational research. The Program Officer in ORTCD serves as the Division’s expert for research education and training of individuals in the areas of mental health treatment, prevention, and services research. The Program Officer is expected to provide scientific and programmatic guidance and support to investigators in the early stages of their research careers conducting research in areas relevant to DSIR’s scientific mission. Responsibilities will include administering and managing an extramural portfolio of research training, education, and career development awards; and the NIMH Loan Repayment Program. Depending on the Program Officer’s scientific expertise and the Division’s programmatic needs, they will also oversee a limited portfolio of research project grants. The Program Officer will collaborate with researchers in the scientific community, and with Program Officers from related scientific programs within NIMH, NIH, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and other public and private funding agencies.


The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university, including acceptance of the dissertation, in an academic field related to health sciences research. Experience in the conduct of research or research management, and data-based publications in mental health interventions and/or mental health services research is required. Strong organizational, oral, writing, and communication skills are required. Experience with the grants process is preferable. The successful candidate is subject to a background investigation and public financial disclosure requirements.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens. The work site is in Rockville, Maryland. A full package of federal Civil Service benefits is available, including retirement, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, leave, and a Thrift Savings Plan (401K equivalent). Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. The position will be posted at the GS-13, GS-14, and GS-15 federal government salary grades , with an annual salary between $102,663 and $170,800.
