The Division of Neuroscience and Basic Behavioral Science is seeking an exceptional candidate for Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) to guide and manage a grants program supporting basic research in social and affective and social cognitive neuroscience. The Program Officer will lead an extramurally funded and innovative program employing causal experimental designs, cutting edge neurobiological and behavioral approaches, and multiple levels of analysis to decipher the mechanisms underlying affect, social behavior, and social cognition in healthy humans and animals. Topic areas within this program include emotions, mood, stress and resilience, affiliative and agonistic behaviors, social communication, and social cognition, and investigations into their development and regulation. The program supports studies that seek to determine both the structure and function of neural circuits underlying these domains of function. This program seeks research that proposes causal experimental designs, utilizes cutting edge neurobiological and behavioral approaches, and combines multiple levels of analysis. Hypothesis-driven studies of circuit mechanisms mediating the interaction between cognition and emotion and spatio-temporal interactions across brain networks that contribute to emotional or social behaviors are of special interest. Also of interest are studies investigating sex differences in neural circuits underlying social behaviors and novel, quantitative methods to measure emotional or social behavior in real-world settings.
The position provides an opportunity to impact priorities, develop new research initiatives, and contribute to the advancement of a national program of social and affective neuroscience research addressing neuronal circuit-level mechanisms that underlie affect, social behavior, and social cognition. Individuals are encouraged to apply who have research experience using a broad range of methods employed in neuroscience, social neuroscience, and cognitive neuroscience of emotion regulation.
General responsibilities will include administering and managing an extramural portfolio of research grants; interacting with researchers and program officers for related programs at NIMH, NIH, and other funding agencies; and developing new research initiatives.
This position requires working both independently and collaboratively. Strong organizational and oral and written communication skills are also required. Salary will be commensurate with the experience of the candidate. Qualifications
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university, including acceptance of the dissertation, in an academic field, or the health or pertinent sciences allied to health or health-related research.
