Position Overview

NIMH is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of National Autism Coordinator, NIMH Office of the Director (OD). The incumbent serves as national coordinator on all federal autism activities, coordinating autism research activities across the federal government.

Position Duties

The incumbent provides executive-level leadership to enhance the effectiveness of the autism research portfolio of the federal government, participate in HHS research coordination activities, and routinely report federal agency autism research activities through the HHS Secretary to Congress. The incumbent also serves as a liaison between the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC), NIH, HHS, other federal agencies and departments, and stakeholder communities, providing information to guide federal and public-private coordination efforts, which will include gathering relevant information and preparing official reports of federal autism activities.

The incumbent must possess an in-depth knowledge of the structure of federal autism programs and their scientific agendas, and maintain staffing levels to facilitate communication and reporting, assure staff accomplishments, perform resource planning, and identify efficient business operational practices. This requires a sophisticated knowledge of autism research opportunities and the unique characteristics to be capable of managing an interdisciplinary staff with a variety of backgrounds and interests to generate a work environment which is cooperative and productive.


Applicants must possess an M.D. and/or Ph.D. or educational equivalent in neuroscience or a related medical or scientific discipline with broad, extensive familiarity with autism spectrum disorder research and services. The incumbent must also have a background of direct administration or management of program efforts with national dimensions and be known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally.

The HHS National Autism Coordinator will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications and experience. Full federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, long term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent) will be provided.
