Position Overview

Health Scientist Administrator (Scientific Review Officer)

The NIMH Division of Extramural Activities (DEA) is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time position as a Scientific Review Officer (SRO) within the Extramural Review Branch (ERB). The NIMH ERB is responsible for the scientific and technical merit review of grant applications that address NIMH-specific needs primarily in response to NIMH-initiated Funding Opportunity Announcements (e.g., Request for Applications (RFAs), Program Announcement Reviewed (PARs)). This responsibility includes, but is not limited to, (a) managing the peer review of applications to fund research projects, fellowships, centers, and cooperative agreements in the areas of neuroscience and behavioral science, and in clinical, epidemiological, and mental health services research, (b) monitoring the review process to ensure quality and conformance to NIH policy, and (c) preparing review summary reports for the National Advisory Mental Health Council.

Candidates suitable for an SRO position at NIMH should have a strong academic history and extensive training and experience in research areas important to the NIMH mission. For this opportunity, in particular, candidates trained in clinical psychology/clinical neuroscience or psychiatry/translational psychiatry, with substantial experience in any of the following areas are encouraged to apply: treatment development, mental health-related clinical trials, psychotherapeutic/behavioral and/or device-based interventions, and mental health services research.


Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of 4-5 years of post-doctoral and/or professional experience in those fields. Individuals with current or prior academic faculty positions are of particular interest but are not required.
