Research in Clinical Neuroscience
Build a research program that matches your vision! The Division of Intramural Research Programs (DIRP) of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institutes of Health (NIH), invites outstanding individuals to apply for a tenure eligible position in areas of clinical translational research in mental health. We especially encourage applications from mid-level or senior candidates from under-represented minority groups, as well as women. The NIMH DIRP currently has clinical research programs in child and adult psychiatry, cognitive/affective neuroscience, mood and anxiety, and women’s mental health research. The NIMH DIRP is one of the largest and most active neuroscience research communities in the world. Investigators have access to state-of-the art technologies including genomics, structural and functional MRI, MEG, polysomnography, PET, and MRS, all dedicated to research and located within the NIH Clinical Center on the NIH Campus, Bethesda, Maryland. Visit www.nimh.nih.gov and www.clinicalcenter.nih.gov for more information.
A successful individual will be expected to develop and direct an independent research laboratory and clinic that recruits and studies psychiatric patients and is focused on problems relevant to the mental health community. Individuals interested in translational approaches to novel treatment development are particularly encouraged to apply, but other areas of interest are also welcome. Similarly, while the NIMH DIRP is interested in creating programs centered on neurodevelopmental disorders, OCD, trauma/PTSD, sleep, neuroimmune disorders, psychosis, and/or neuropsychiatric genetic conditions, investigators working in other areas are also welcome to apply. Candidates must have earned an M.D., an M.D./Ph.D., or a clinical Ph.D. Candidates must have demonstrated experience as an outstanding independent investigator. An individual selected for the position is expected to build a diverse and inclusive, dynamic and productive patient-focused research laboratory and clinic; mentor and train scientists; and make use of the excellent opportunities for collaborative, translational, and high-risk/high-reward science available at the NIH. Laboratory space and start-up funds, access to shared research facilities, and on-going research support are competitive with premier academic institutions. Salary is commensurate with experience and accomplishments and a full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health, life and long-term care insurance, and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available.
Applicants should send a curriculum vitae (CV), bibliography, statement of research interests, and three letters of reference to: Susan G. Amara, Ph.D., National Institute of Mental Health, c/o Jane Schriver via email to Jane.Schriver@nih.gov, indicating “Clinical Research Recruit” in the subject line. Please include in your CV a description of your mentoring and outreach activities, especially those involving women and persons from racial/ethnic or other groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research. Applications will begin to be reviewed in September 2020.
