The Division of Translational Research (DTR) at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) directs, plans, and supports programs of research that translate knowledge from basic science to discover the etiology, pathophysiology, and trajectory of mental illnesses and develop effective interventions for children and adults. The Adult Pathophysiology and Biological Interventions Branch supports programs of research aimed at understanding the brain basis of mental illnesses, specifically multidisciplinary studies with human and model systems on the genetic, molecular, cellular, circuit, and systems levels of brain function designed to elucidate the pathophysiology of mental illnesses and to translate these findings to clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prevention strategies.
Position Overview
The Division is looking for an individual to serve as a Special Volunteer to support the Traumatic Stress Research Program. This program coordinates research on psychopathology related to trauma. This includes research on neurobiological, behavioral, cognitive, and other risk and protective factors for psychopathology after traumatic events and the development of interventions for post-traumatic psychopathology. The Special Volunteer is expected to provide support with time-sensitive requests related to COVID-19 mental health topics and other related requests, including conduct searches of scientific literature related to behavioral health and related topics; track, locate, and gather published papers on specific topics; prepare up-to-date summaries, talking points, and slides; retrieve data related to the review and administration of extramural grants and supplements from NIH grants databases; participate in related meetings; assist in gathering and preparing relevant materials for distribution before meetings; etc.
This position requires a strong scientific background and familiarity with scientific research searches. Ability to summarize literature both verbally and graphically (e.g., talking points and slides), familiarity with scientific databases, and experience in navigating published research articles are also required.
