Pre-Announcement - Director of the Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is the lead federal agency for research on mental disorders. NIMH is one of the 27 Institutes and Centers that make up the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the largest biomedical research agency in the world. NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Position Overview

The National Institute of Mental Health, a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Director, Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health, Office of the Director. This Congressionally mandated position reports to the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, and serves as the Director’s principal staff advisor on issues of recruitment, retention and training of a diverse scientific workforce and research on mental health disparities. The Director is responsible for leading the Institute’s Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health, and works with other senior leadership members to formulate practices, policies and procedures that will have a positive impact on NIMH initiatives and activities, especially as these relate to diverse populations and global mental health issues.

Qualifications

Applicants must possess an M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent degree in a field relevant to the position. Broad senior-level experience in direct administration of a research, science education or public health related program is also required. Applicants should be known and respected within their profession as distinguished individuals of outstanding leadership and management ability, with a solid understanding of issues impacting mental illness for global services and diverse populations. Experience with clinical care in a global health setting is highly desirable. Knowledge of NIH administrative policies, procedures, and operations is preferable but not essential.
