Staff Scientist

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Division of Intramural Research Programs (IRP)
Section on PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences (PRSSVWP)

Program Overview

The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for a Staff Scientist position in the Division of Intramural Research Programs (IRP) Section on PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences (PRSS) in the Molecular Imaging Branch (MIB) of NIMH. PRSS is focused on developing novel radiotracers for PET imaging of proteins in human brains that may be involved in neuropsychiatric disorders, and which may become targets for novel drug therapies. To fulfill this mission, the laboratory implements expertise in medicinal chemistry and radiochemistry with two short-lived cyclotron-produced positron-emitters, namely carbon-11 (t1/2 = 20 min) and fluorine-18 (110 min). PRSS interacts strongly with the Imaging Section of MIB to evaluate radiotracer candidates with PET, and to apply successful radiotracers in clinical studies.

Position Duties

This position’s primary responsibilities include conducting leading edge research aimed at the development of novel radiotracers for PET imaging of brain. The individual will develop independent projects aligned with the mission of the Section and establish collaborations to broaden the scope of the Section’s research. Lastly, the individual will support and train laboratory members, collaborate on projects led by other members in this Section, present at national and international meetings, and assist in writing manuscripts for publication.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry or a closely related discipline. Priority will be given to candidates with strong experience in research areas relevant to the work conducted in PRSS (e.g., medicinal chemistry, radiotracer design, radiochemistry methodology, and radiotracer production and analysis methods), and with a strong publication record in these areas.

How to Apply

Interested applicants should send their curriculum vitae, a one-page statement of research interests, and three letters of recommendation to Dr. Victor Pike, Chief, PRSS.

Applications will be accepted until August 27, 2022.

Benefits

The Staff Scientist will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications, education, and experience. In addition, full federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement, and Thrift savings plan (401K equivalent), will be available.

COVID Vaccination Status

Federal agencies may request information regarding the vaccination status of selected applicants for the purposes of implementing other workplace safety protocols, such as protocols related to masking, physical distancing, testing, travel, and quarantine. Employees providing healthcare or services in support of healthcare (Healthcare Workforce) may be required to receive a COVID-19 vaccine because they are expected to perform duties that put them in contact or potential contact with patients. We may request COVID-19 vaccination, and other vaccination documentation from Healthcare Workforce personnel at any point during the onboarding process or at any time during your employment with NIH.

HHS and NIH are Equal Opportunity Employers

The NIH is dedicated to building a diverse community in its training and employment programs and encourages the application and nomination of qualified women, minorities, and individuals with disabilities.
