Brain Cell Atlas and Cell Census Program

This Program supports optimization and implementation of innovative scalable approaches for large-scale characterization of normative brain cell diversity and anatomical organization underlying brain functions relevant to mental illness. This primarily encompasses studies supported through the BRAIN Initiative on brain cellular makeup and organizational principles conserved across organisms and specialized in individual species. Areas supported by this program include, but are not limited to:

  • Construction of reference brain cell atlases with molecular, anatomical, and physiological annotations of brain cell diversity in humans and model organisms
  • Pilot optimization of high throughput assays and technology platforms that enable a systematic cell census and construction of reference brain atlases.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to discuss their proposals with the Institute contact listed below prior to the submission of their application to ascertain that their proposed work is aligned with NIMH funding priorities.
