Participating in Research
Participation in research studies helps transform the understanding and treatment of mental illnesses through basic science and clinical research.
What types of research does the ETPB do?
The ETPB has multiple clinical research studies looking at adults with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. Healthy Volunteers also take part in our studies to help us understand the differences between individuals with and without mood disorders. We have both inpatient and outpatient research studies.
What types of procedures do study participants do when at the NIH?
Participants in our research studies may undergo a number of evaluations and tests, including: physical exams, blood draws, medical and psychiatric interviews, questionnaires, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetoencephalography (MEG), and Polysomnography (sleep studies).
What is the time commitment?
Your time commitment will vary. Our outpatient studies enroll participants into either a 4- or 10-week study. Our inpatient studies vary more, from 4-weeks to 2 to 3 months.
What does it cost to participate?
There is no cost to participate in research studies. All treatment associated with research study participation is free of charge. Travel arrangements are provided and costs covered by NIMH. (Arrangements vary by distance and by specific study.) Standard treatment is provided to participants while transitioning back to the community.
Where are the studies conducted?
Our studies are conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, the largest clinical research hospital in the world.
Can I participate if I do not live near NIH?
Yes, our bipolar depression studies enroll eligible participants locally and from around the country. Travel arrangements provided and costs covered by NIMH. (Arrangements vary by distance and by specific study.)
How do I learn more about participating in clinical research studies?
