Michelle Y. Cortes, PhD
Dr. Michelle Y. Cortes is a Postdoctoral Fellow who joined the PET Radiopharmaceutical Science Section (PRSS), Molecular Imaging Branch (MIB) in October, 2013. She received her BSc in Chemistry (with honors) in 2002 at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayaguez. She earned a MS in Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico with the guidance of Dr. Robert Rios. Her work involved the synthesis of peripheral benzodiazepine receptor-platinum ligands as possible therapeutic drugs for ovarian, breast, prostate and colon cancer. In 2011, she obtained her PhD in organic chemistry at the University of South Florida. Her graduate work centered on the development and evaluation of sigma receptor ligands as potential post-ischemic stroke therapeutics under the guidance of Dr. J. C. Antilla and Dr. J. Cuevas. Dr. Cortes’s current research will focus on developing novel imaging agents for neuroinflammation.
