Transforming the understanding
and treatment of mental illnesses.

Dr. Robert Cox is the Director of the Scientific and Statistical Computing Core in the National Institute of Mental Health, Intramural Research Program of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland. He received his B.S. in Mathematics from The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasedena, California in 1976. Dr. Cox worked in industry for eight years before starting graduate studies in Applied Mathematics at Caltech where he received his Ph.D. in 1988. He did his postdoctoral work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in the Computing Division until 1991. Then at Indiana University for two years, then to the Medical College of Wisconsin for seven years. Dr. Cox has been the Director of the Scientific and Statistical Computing Core since its inception 2001.

Research Interests

Dr. Cox is interested in the mathematical computational analysis of brain imaging data, in particular functional MRI. (And he loves linear algebra, one of the core “technologies” of the modern world, including data analysis.)
