BSC Counselor - John L. R. Rubenstein, M.D., Ph.D.
John Rubenstein M.D. Ph.D. is the Nina Ireland Distinguished Professor in Child Psychiatry at UCSF. His laboratory focuses on genetic, molecular and cellular mechanisms that control the development of the cerebral cortex and basal ganglia, and has contributed to understanding their organization, the patterning centers that regulate their regionalization, the transcription factors and gene regulatory elements that control the identity and differentiation of forebrain subdivisions and cell types. His studies have implications on mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism and epilepsy. Dr. Rubenstein is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
