Job Vacancy Announcement – Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer)

Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
National Institutes of Health (NIH)
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Division of AIDS Research (DAR)
Center for Global Mental Health Research (CGMHR)

Program Overview

The NIMH seeks exceptional candidates to fill the position of Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer) in the Center for Global Mental Health Research (CGMHR).  The CGMHR coordinates the Institute’s efforts to generate knowledge that will improve the lives of people living with mental illnesses in low-resource settings worldwide. With the goal of supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development and Universal Health Coverage goals, the Center is interested in increasing the body of evidence necessary to inform decision concerning the adoption and scaling-up of evidence-based interventions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The Center’s focus on expanding research in low-resource settings is driven by the need to address mental health care that is often inadequate, inaccessible, and of less-than-optimal quality. Attention to low- and middle-income countries reflects an understanding that the inclusion of diverse populations, communities, contexts, and researchers from across the globe, can accelerate and enrich scientific advancements while helping to reduce mental health disparities globally. The Center’s focus on global mental health reflects an understanding of how the rapid movements of populations, global economic relationships, and communication technologies have created more permeable borders and new forms of interconnectedness among nations and people. These trends both require and enable researchers to address the variations in incidence, prevalence, and course of mental health and mental disorders across diverse populations using a global perspective.

Position Duties

The position involves professional responsibility for the administration of a federal grants program of basic and applied research related to public health that requires an extensive, professional scientific background that is normally obtained by meeting the requirements of a Ph.D. in an appropriate field, followed by relevant post-doctoral research.

CGMHR is looking for an individual to lead its health services research portfolio. This program supports the investigation studying of how social factors, financing structures, payment mechanisms, organizational arrangements, human resources, and personal behaviors affect the supply, demand and outcomes in global mental healthcare.

Qualifications

Candidates should have a strong academic history and extensive training and experience in research areas important to the NIMH mission.  Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of four – five years of post-doctoral and/or professional experience in those fields. NIH experience preferred.

How to Apply

Interested parties should send a letter of interest, including a curriculum vitae, to NIMHsearch@mail.nih.gov and Dr. Leonardo Cubillos, Chief, CGHMR at leonardo.cubillos@nih.gov.

Benefits

The Program Officer will be appointed at a salary commensurate with their qualifications and experience. In addition, full federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, retirement, and savings plan (401K equivalent), will be provided.
