K Award Eligibility Extensions

On a case-by-case basis and with appropriate justification, NIMH will consider extending the K award eligibility time frame. Below are examples of circumstances that may allow for extensions of the NIMH mentored K eligibility period. Preapprovals for extension requests should be sent to the appropriate NIMH Research Training and Career Development representative well in advance of the receipt deadline. Waivers will not be considered after an application has been submitted.

  • Childbirth (1-year extension total, even if multiple children/births)
  • Extensions related to periods of part-time status for childcare responsibilities beyond the first 12 months after the birth of the child. Extensions within this context will only be considered when there are extenuating circumstances (e.g., special needs, extended medical issues, etc.).
  • Periods of part-time work or leave; such an extension would be pro-rated equivalent to the time spent out of research. Extensions related to periods of part-time work or leave will be considered only when the appointment is reduced by 50% or more except in the case of childcare responsibilities.
  • Significant change in field of study (e.g., physical science to biological science)

As outlined in NOT-MH-22-310 , periods of time after receipt of terminal degree requirements when the applicant was not conducting research do not count towards K award eligibility.
