Description:
The NIMH Office for Research on Disparities and Global Mental Health (ORDGMH) invites outstanding early career investigators interested in furthering their research careers in global mental health to apply for the NIMH Early Career Investigator International Travel Award. NIMH will provide support up to $5,000 for each selected scholar to cover part of the cost of traveling and attending both the joint Wellcome Trust (WT)/NIMH Global Mental Health Networking Workshop in Cape Town, South Africa, on October 16, 2011, and the World Mental Health Congress of the World Federation for Mental Health in Cape Town, South Africa, on October, 17-21, 2011. The goal of the joint WT/NIMH workshop is to bring together early career investigators, WT funded researchers, senior investigators from around the world, and other key stakeholders (e.g., World Health Organization staff) to facilitate networking, and to advance the research career development of early career investigators in global mental health.
Eligibility:
- Applicants must hold at minimum a terminal research degree (e.g. PhD, DrPH, PsyD, DSW) or medical residency; and must be within 10 years of completing their terminal research degree or medical residency;
- Applicants must be: (1) United States (U.S.) citizens or non-citizen nationals or permanent residents OR (2) foreign scholars currently residing in the U.S. that possess a valid U.S. visa at the time of the application AND are currently enrolled in a U.S. university or research institution;
- Applicants must demonstrate research experience in global mental health (i.e., research conducted outside the U.S. and/or research activities that examine globalizing influences on mental health both within and outside the U.S.).
Application Package:
A complete application package must include: (1) a one and a half page document, (2) a curriculum vita (CV). The one and a half page document should contain the following:
- Complete contact information (preferably work or school): street address, telephone number, and email address;
- Educational qualification clearly outlining the following: (1) all degrees earned and field(s) of study, (2) Dates of acquisition of degrees, (3) name(s) and location(s) of institutions(s);
- A brief biographical statement (not to exceed 150 words);
- A description of the applicant’s current stage of research training, research experience in global mental health, and future plans (not to exceed 200 words); and,
- A statement of what the applicant hopes to gain from participation in the Workshop and the Congress, and how attendance at both events will advance the applicant’s research career development (not to exceed 100 words).

NIMH Program Staff will conduct an administrative review of the applications. Outstanding scholars with the greatest potential for advancing global mental health research will be selected. Applicants will be contacted regarding their award status by Monday July 25, 2011.
