Media Advisory: NIMH Researchers Available to Discuss the Suicide Prevention Research

What: Suicide is a major public health concern. In 2016, suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of nearly 45,000 people. The recent deaths of high-profile public figures and a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report on rising suicide rates have brought the topic of suicide into everyday conversations. For National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, NIMH Director Dr. Joshua Gordon and Dr. Jane Pearson, chair of the Suicide Research Consortium at the NIMH, are available for interviews on suicide prevention research, trends, and the findings and implications of recent studies.
