History
Recognizing the increasing technological demands of neurological and behavioral research, the intramural divisions of NIMH, NINDS, NICHD, and NCCIH combined their resources—personnel, space, and operating budgets—to establish a centralized technical support unit, now known as the Section on Instrumentation (SI) at NIMH. For over 70 years, SI has delivered exceptional return on investment by providing fully customized, in-house engineering services—from concept to turnkey research solutions. With its deep understanding of the NIH mission and research environment, SI enables scientific discovery through responsive, mission-aligned innovation. Its long-standing success reflects the essential role it plays in meeting the evolving needs of intramural research programs across NIH.
The NIMH Section on Instrumentation plays a vital role in advancing scientific discovery at the National Institutes of Health, providing researchers with the innovative tools they need to push the boundaries of mental health research. By designing and fabricating custom solutions, the team empowers scientists to conduct groundbreaking studies that improve patient care and deepen our understanding of the brain. Their work is a testament to the power of collaboration, precision, and ingenuity—essential forces in the pursuit of scientific progress. As Yoda wisely said, "Do or do not, there is no try." The SI embodies this philosophy, turning visionary ideas into tangible solutions that drive discovery forward.
