Bipolar Research Helping Families
In the Human Genetics Branch we are pursuing several different strategies all aimed at discovering genes involved in mood disorders. One of our more recent studies uses large-scale genome sequencing to detect rare changes in genes that may contribute to bipolar disorder in large families. Most people in the US don't have large families anymore, but the Amish and Mennonites, traditional religious communities in the rural US, still have families with 5, 6 , or more children and several generations available.
