NIMH Outreach Partnership Program (OPP) Annual Meeting

NIMH convened the 2016 Annual Meeting of the NIMH Outreach Partnership Program Annual Meeting. Attendees included NIMH leadership and staff, as well as representatives from the 55 NIMH Outreach Partners and some of the more than 80 National Partner organizations.

The meeting opened with a plenary presentation by NIMH grantee, Dr. Kristin Cadenhead from University of California San Diego who discussed the North American Prodromal Longitudinal Study.

The second day of the meeting highlighted other NIMH psychosis efforts with presentations by NIMH grantees, Drs. Steven Lopez and Vinod Srihari. Drs. Lopez and Srihari described their recently-funded research projects using public health approaches to shorten the duration of untreated psychosis.

Acting NIMH Director, Dr. Bruce Cuthbert, presented on the state of mental health research. Other presentations focused on: the short- and long-term strategies to reduce teen suicide rates; the science of mindfulness; pharmacologic and device-based advancements in the treatment of refractory depression; the need to improve access to care to reduce mental health disparities; the use of trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy for children and adolescents; and activities carried out by select Outreach Partners to address mental health in the criminal justice and law enforcement settings, including training the domestic violence community to understand and address the mental health impacts of trauma.
