Pedro E. Martinez, MD is the Medical Director of the Reproductive Psychiatry Clinic for the Behavioral Endocrinology Branch in the Division of Intramural Research Programs at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He trained in adult and child psychiatry with an interest in developmental and neuroendocrine mechanisms in mood disorders as well as adaptation to chronic conditions.
Research Interests
Dr. Pedro E. Martinez’s research focuses on the influence of sex steroids on the regulation of mood and brain function. More specifically, his work is concentrated on reproductive related mood disorders in women (postpartum depression and psychosis, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, and mood disorders associated with the menopause transition). Recently he has been studying the effects of the pubertal transition on brain development in healthy children. He also serves as a psychiatric consultant to the transplant and pediatric oncology units at the National Institutes of Health for both adult and child patients and has been working with patients dealing with chronic illnesses for the past twenty years.
