BSC Member - K. Luan Phan, M.D.
K. Luan Phan, M.D. is Professor and Chair of The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. He is also chief of psychiatry services for the health system. Dr. Phan previously was the Center on Depression and Resilience Endowed Professor, vice chair of Clinical Services and associate head of Clinical and Translational Research in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
For over 20 years, Dr. Phan has studied how life experiences – particularly how adversity, stress and trauma in childhood and adulthood – affect the brain and behavior, and lead to mental health challenges. His research focuses on uncovering how the brain relates to mental health and addiction and leveraging that information to improve care and discover new treatments.
He has published over 300 peer-reviewed scientific papers and won numerous national awards for his research, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers.
Dr. Phan earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He received psychiatry residency and research fellowship training at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinics at the University of Pittsburgh and at the University of Michigan Hospitals and Clinics.
