Melissa A. Brotman, Ph.D., is a tenured Stadtman Principal Investigator of the Section on Neuroscience and Novel Therapeutics (NNT) within the Emotion and Development Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Intramural Research Program (IRP). Dr. Brotman received her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where she specialized in cognitive behavioral therapy for mood and anxiety disorders. After completing her clinical internship at the Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System/University of Maryland-Baltimore, she pursued postdoctoral training in neuroscience, focusing on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and the measurement of clinical irritability in youth.

Dr. Brotman is a Fellow of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) and serves as Chair of the ACNP Public Liaison Committee. She has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications and has received two NIH Bench-to-Bedside grants. She serves on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Psychiatry and as a Deputy Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry. Her research and leadership have been recognized through multiple NIMH and professional society awards, including the NIMH IRP Seymour S. Kety Memorial Training Award, the Society of Biological Psychiatry Fellowship Award, and the NIMH Directors Award. Mentorship is also a central component of her career, and her commitment to mentoring has been recognized with two NIMH Outstanding Mentor Awards.
